Step 2. DNA Collection Methods

Buccal Swab Collection for DNA Testing

Buccal swabbing is a non-invasive and painless method of collecting DNA samples for various tests, including paternity testing.

• Preparation: The individual should avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for at least 30 minutes before the collection to prevent contamination.

• Collection Process: A sterile swab, resembling a cotton swab, is gently rubbed along the inside of the cheek to collect cells. The swab is then placed in an envelope to prevent contamination.

• Advantages: Quick and easy process suitable for individuals of all ages, including infants

 Blood Collection for Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)

For non-invasive prenatal testing, a blood sample is collected from the expectant mother to analyze fetal DNA.

• Preparation: There is typically no special preparation required for this type of blood collection.

• Collection Process: A small amount of blood is drawn from the mother’s arm, similar to a standard blood test. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

• Advantages: Provides information about the fetus without any risk to the pregnancy

•  Can be performed as early as 7 weeks into the pregnancy
