DNA Sample Viability Assessment
Alternative Sample Sources
Service Description
DNA Sample Viability Assessment When considering DNA testing, it's crucial to ensure the sample collected is sufficient and viable for analysis. This service is an additional step used alongside a DNA test to determine the adequacy of a sample before proceeding with a full analysis. This is particularly important when samples are obtained through unconventional methods other than the standard buccal swabs (cheek swabs). Alternative Sample Sources Here are some examples of alternative sources from which DNA can be collected: 1. Ear Wax Sample: A less common but viable source of DNA. 2. Hair Sample: Typically requires the follicle and 7-10 pieces for accurate testing. 3. Straw: Contains saliva residues that may hold DNA. 4. Toothbrush: Often used as it retains saliva and epithelial cells. Viability Testing To ensure the DNA test can be successfully conducted, a viability assessment is performed on these alternative samples. This process involves: - Sample Evaluation: Testing the sample to ensure it contains enough DNA material. - Non-Refundable Fee: A fee is charged for this service, and it is non-refundable regardless of the outcome, whether the laboratory is able to extract DNA or not. Importance of Viability Testing This service is crucial for those opting for DNA testing using non-standard samples. It provides a preliminary check to confirm that the sample can yield accurate results, thereby avoiding the disappointment and additional costs of failed tests. Remember, this is an additional service to any relationship tests being conducted, ensuring that the samples are ready and suitable for comprehensive analysis.
